| Id like to see some rationale for changing things up. Specifically, Id like to see some attention paid to the responsibilities incumbent on specific ranks at present and how those responsibilities would be handled under a new structure.
For reference, our current rank strcture is laid out here: Current Rank Structure
Lets about each of these specifically:
Lower ranks: Below officer rank it is all kind of window dressing. There is some minor role play there but most people don't pay it a lot of attention and I don't think it really matters too much what the names of the ranks are or the exact number of levels and the like. My main concern with the lower ranks is that we keep whatever lore on the website up to date and keep the feelings of lore centric members in mind.
Warrant officers: These guys are missing from the current lore on the website. This needs to be fixed. Basically these are officer candidates that have not yet completed their training. We have some established procedures for training that have collected some dust, it needs a little love and care.
Lower officer ranks: These currently run Ensign, Second Lieutenant, Lieutenant. While there are three gradations there are no major differences in responsibility between these ranks. Lower officers are responsible for running individual events, basic discipline/morale issues and setting a good example for the rest of the clan. Lower officer ranks enjoy a rather limited set of powers and responsibilities.
Ship officers: The ship officer ranks are commander and captain. They are by definition second and first in command of a ship. We have, for a variety of historical reasons I'm not going to get into at this juncture, not had a functioning ship and ship wars structure for some time. We regularly discuss bringing this back to the clan and I would like to see it happen just as soon as we can get enough dedicated officers as necessary to make it a success. However, until such time and ships and ship wars are brought back, these ranks are not functionally distinguishable from the lower officer ranks.
Upper officer ranks: Vice Admiral and Admiral. These ranks are historically involved in the management of "fleets" which consist of several ships. As we do not have ships at the moment, and even when we do reintroduce them we aren't likely to have such a multitude of ships as to warrant fleets, these ranks don't mean an awful lot. In practice these ranks are given to officers which advanced seniority who have demonstrated leadership whos scope is greater than at the individual event level.
Fleet Admiral: This rank really stands alone. The fleet admiral is responsible for everything that happens in the UMC. He is responsible for organizing all of the lower officers, promotions, discipline and may delegate individual responsibilities to lower officer ranks at his own discretion. You could write a whole book about what a Fleet Admiral is responsible for doing but suffice to say that it is a key position with great power and responsibility. The Fleet Admiral is more responsible the management of structure and individuals and less for responsible for events.
High Command: High Command could be thought of as the steering committee for the clan. It is made up of a number of offices with specific responsibilities but often meets as a group to discuss and decide policy issues. High Command members are entrusted with access to things that lower officers are not and have the power to exercise individual judgement in places where lower officers would be expected to confer with High Command. Each High Command office bears individual discussion.
Domestic Advisor. I said before that the Fleet admiral is less responsible for events. The domestic advisor is the person who is more responsible in this area. They coordinate officers running specific events, make sure backup is available, make sure we have new events constantly scheduled and are generally responsible all such things *internal* to the clan.
Foreign Advisor. This position is somewhat similar to the domestic advisor except they are responsible for events that allow participation outside the clan. A common example of that are clan wars. We also regularly have community tourments, stream events and the like. The Foreign Advisor is responsible for scheduling, delegating and management of all things that interact with people outside the clan.
Security Advisor. This position is a bit outdated. When I held it my duties were more or less those of webmaster. In the past the security advisor has run classified operations that can not be discussed here. It is a somewhat less public facing role.
Vice President. Pretty straightforward, second in command of the clan and backup to the President. Responsible for "doing the needful". Is usually the best looking person in the clan. *holla*
President. I'm tired of typing, I think ya'll understand what the president is responsible for.
Now that that is done, lets talk about what is needed to change the current rank structure.
1. Rationale. Changing things for the sake of change is not an argument. Any proposed changes need to have written rationale so that it may be discussed in an organized fashion. In the absence of strong specific rationale, it makes sense to leave things as they are because some members have a lot of emotional investment in the clans history and lore.
2. A mapping of responsibilities. Any new rank structure needs to clearly place individual responsiblities and job functions onto the new ranks. Who is responsible for the domestic advisor's present award duties under the new sytem? Who handles scheduling clan wars? Is room going to be left for ships and ship wars in the future? These and more questions need to be directly addressed.
3. Lore and Systems. There exists a body of lore around the present rank structure. We have pages talking about all this, a complicated rank structure built into the forum and website software, more rank structure built into the auto roster structure, images of rank insignia and all kinds of such things. We would need to rewrite the lore, do a lot of modification to the forums, website and auto rosters and so on to effect a change to the present structure. It is a lot of work. This can certainly be accomplished but we need to make sure that we have all of these things in hand.
If we can get all of this stuff organized, written, discussed and agreed upon, Awesome. I think we would then need to appoint someone specifically responsible for implementing the changes, probably the Fleet Admiral.
Damaged, this is a pretty big project to take on. I hope you are up to the challenge. That said, I'm very glad to see that we have up and coming officers enthusiastic about improving the clan. Good Luck!

| Really there is nothing wrong with the clans rank structure. The ranks of the clan are the one remaining pillar of the old clan, and one of The Confederations strongest traditions. Also changing the names of the ranks does nothing. If you really want too focus on the ranks, make the current ranks more functional think of easy fun ways to make them relevant. The way the clan used to be run welcomed and required lots of role play, now not so much. Make ships, and captains relevant. That should be the goal of anyone who wants to change anything when it comes to our current structure.

| Greetings,
It's really exciting to see someone invest a lot of time in such a great project. While I agree with JDman regarding the importance and historical significance of ConFed's ranking structure, I want to encourage Damaged and the current leadership to continue to push forward in a thoughtful discussion of ways to continuously improve this clan and community.
I think there may be a way to incorporate these "new age" ideas into the existing structure without completely re-doing it. While I am no longer a member and this is the clan of the current membership, I hope that future ideas will continue to respect the history of this great clan. It is possible to combine the two, you just have to find it.
Good luck and this is very impressive!
Cheers, Oblivion

| @Flamer, hence why its hard and rare to get, it can be an "elder" status, and represents how much and how long you have been in the clan by being loyal, faithful, and dedicated.
@JDMan, their is a problem with our rank structure, we are not following it. If we did "precisely" that, then we do not have to change it at all or much. Perhaps a little tweaking.
@Oblivion, perhaps you are right. Perhaps there is a way to combine both.
**************UPDATE***************
A little tweaking to add to the structure.
High Command: These guys are the soul reason why ConFed is even here. They oversee management and the clan itself to ensure everything is self sufficient and is running smoothly. | Again changing the names of the ranks wont make them work any better trust me. The ranks are not followed because no one cares about the role play anymore. I mean we shouldn't even have a fleet admiral when we don't have a fleet.... The clan was never designed for perpetual dry dock. We need active captains and ships, then suddenly ranks matter. I am the crazy guy arguing we need ships in the corner, after the problem this summer when ship wars failed i think many are timid to try it agian. Damaged if you really want change, to make the ranks and roles matter get people excited to be officers, make them feel like they matter. Thats the key too the whole problem. I like your idea about having "slots" the old clan used to have slots on each ship. 1 Vice admiral/captain, 1 commander, 2 lts, 2 2nd lts and 4 ensigns i believe. Each ship had its own page and roster. With the auto roster system i dont see why we cant do this agian.

| Hello,
It's exciting to see someone who is so new to be so interested in our Ranking system. Keep in mind that this is literally an overhaul of the way ConFed works and the changing of years of work.
While these are all great Ranks and their order/structure makes sense in a real militaristic world, they don't relate to ConFed very much. We are a Starcraft 2 Video Game Clan for fun! The Ranks we have now have been refined from years and years of membership. They are the Ranks of the people. Our Ranks also tie directly into ConFed's main structure of 2 Fleet's, 6 Ships, and our main event Ship Wars. While these structures are not present at this time, they will be in the not so distant future. So doing a complete re-haul at this point in time I feel would be quite the challenge and maybe even a step backwards. That does not mean I am not open to change however;
We need to focus on making our current Ranks matter and mean something. Bringing our old structure of Fleet's and permanent Ships back will help this issue, but I believe there is more we can do as well.
If you could continue to elaborate on these changes that would be fantastic. I'm looking for information such as; Why does ConFed need to change to these Ranks? What is different about these Ranks compared to our current Ranks? What makes them matter to the Clan and the members? How are they better than what's currently in place? How would they work with Ships? Etc.
I look forward to a response!
Thank you, President CrunChy

| Damaged, I absolutely love that you're taking the initiative to improve our clan not only from the gaming-aspect (with your GM skill), but from the in-clan aspect as well. However, I'm inclined to agree with CrunChy and JDman on this one.
Although our current ranking structure will definitely require refinements of sorts in the future, I believe we should stick to it for the most part at the moment.
It would be in our best interests to reap all of the benefits of the current structure before moving on to a more "modern" ConFed Ranking Structure.
Maybe post-Ship Wars time would be a good time to implement any necessary changes?
Just a thought.

| Once limited slot ships come back the system will work as it was intended. Without the stress of busy work with a ships rosters because of the auto roster there is no good reason we can't re launch ships. We have a competent fleet admiral, and umc command. We also have good active captians and vice admirals. Putting members on a ship list instead of drydock doesn't change anything so we shouldn't fear that. Once we have more then one ship we have weekly Mini ship wars. In house chobo team. If we can win and Excell at chobo which is FAR more complicated. We can handle staffing and relaunching ships. Once they relaunch the ranks will matter. Now as to what the ranks mean damaged you should take the ranks we have and further define the roles of each. Keep.role play in mind as well as clan function. Damaged I would love to help you brainstorm
Clan: The Confederation Rank: President Branch: High Command Legend, Ex-Commandant, Ex-Fleet Admiral Ex CPA, Ex CSA, Ex president.
