Here is a page that discuss the different leagues by population:

http://www.sc2ranks.com/stats/league

Your ranking depends on your MMR, match making rating, and the higher it is, the higher ranked you will become.

I've been reading through this thread for a while now. Many people say the description of this league is outdated since people are much better at SC2 now, but it's still a pretty good assessment I think.

If you belong to a league, you can win 50% against your own league and beat players one league lower with a comfortable margin. Everyone has areas of relative weakness and fixing those areas allow you to move up in leagues. At the same time, when playing people of a lower league, you have enough of an advantage through some combination of mechanics/strategy/etc. that you can make mistakes and still win the game.

Theoretically, the difference could be in just one area like macro. In my experience, playing people of a lower league feels like they are a little slower/weaker in every aspect. I can see their strategy coming ahead of time, their army is smaller than it could it, they react slower to drops, the army isn't microed quite as good, they dont put as much pressure with their units as higher leagues would.

If you're talking about how to get promoted to the next league, that's another question.

Agree with SuiChoy. When I play top Platinum players, they are good and the game isn't easy. But I always know I'm winning. I never feel very threatened (unless protoss rofl). Basically the timings are late or the army is smaller and not controlled as well. These things are vague, but it's amazing how the game can be quite close, but I know eventually I will strike the killing blow.
