Secrets of a Teenage Vampire
Chapter One:

Welcome to Myca City; a city enshrouded in mystery, a city at the center of supernatural activity. Almost everyone in town has a secrets they don’t want others; especially outsiders to know about.

My family is no different, we have three big secrets.

Secret number one: my mother Esmeralda is a mighty sorceress, Secret number two: My dad Darius is a top-notch monster hunter and number three is my secret...and it is really top secret, so secret not even my parents know about it.

Oh! Why is it so secret you ask well…Okay I’ll just come out and say it, I’m a Vampire and the main reason I don’t want my parents to know, is simply because, mother would freak out and ground me for like three years, and Dad…he’d try to kill me you see he has a special vendetta against the blood suckers.

My name is Rorey Valentino and the story I’m about to tell you is about happens when you accidently oust your secrets.
My story begins during Myca City’s annual Sunset Festival. The festival is the most anticipated event of the summer, so of course, my entire family was excited me included.

However even with the jubilation of the festival in the air I couldn’t shake the bad feeling I was gettingbut I dismissed it.

As we got into my dad’s car to head to the festival grounds a loud screeching began to emanate from his back pocket, he pulls out a slim device that looked like an iPod except it was blood red with two antenna attached to the top and the screen had squiggly line, like the line you’d see on one of those heart machines at the hospital; well it was pulsing up and down very quickly, my father looks at it and dismisses it as a glitch after uttering his favorite nickname for the device

“Damn thing!”

Aside from that the car ride was relatively quiet that is until the “Damn thing!” went off for the second time in only an hour, dad again curses at it and dismisses it as a glitch.

Now my Dad isn’t that observant…at least not with family things, if it has claws, spits fire or roars he notices it immediately.

Now I’d like to say that was the last time the device went off but nope because it went off again just before we reached the gates.

My dad finally gets fed up with the thing “I don’t understand it my UED sensor keeps going off" he states more to himself than anyone else.

“I mean it had glitches in the past but if it’s going this frequently that means there is major Class A monster on the loose.”

My mom gives her warning look

“That thing goes off at the slightest hint of black magic; I wouldn’t be surprised if there are warlocks and poltergeists here.”

Ah that’s mom direct and straight to the point.

Oh but she doesn’t know how much I wish it was just black magic because she deals with warlocks all the time, but I know what it is setting of Dad’s UED thing in short it’s me.

As we walk through the festival grounds my mother, Esmeralda notices my quiet demeanor.

“Rorey, sweetheart you’re awfully quiet, normally you’re hoping up and down like a maniac by now”

she smiles at me I can’t help but plaster a smile on my face and say:

“ It’s nothing Mom, I’m fine”

mom sighs and backs off, she’s a good mom but knows when I won’t talk but I know she’ll try again later. My mom suggested I wander off for a bit and take a break from my monster obsessed father.

So I take her advice and take my own course. The first thing I walk up to is the funhouse, it’s hard to believe that seven years ago I was so terrified of the place and now that fear has faded into history.

I walk in, hoping to forget my dad and my curse I look into the first mirror and I don’t see my reflection and of course that’s when I remember vampires don’t reflect light so I won’t appear in mirror or on a photograph.

At that thought I felt a surge of rage more ferocious than I had ever felt; I then slammed my fist into the mirror and put a linebacker sized hole in the wall, did I mention vampires had the strength of Superman.

I got out of there quick; this was bad my vampire powers were starting to show themselves you see I was bitten only one year ago so my powers took a while to come in.

Vanessa DuGalle is my best friend and the only other person who knows I’m a vampire; even after learning that fact, Vanessa remained my friend. She truly is one of a kind; Vanessa understands me better that anyone ever could.

I’ve always felt calm around her because I don’t have to be anyone but myself. The thing is she moved away three years ago but she always came back for the Sunset Festival like me it was her favorite time of the year too…well that and my birthday because she got to beat me up.

I’m usually get butterflies at the thought of seeing Vanessa here but when I saw her this year she’d changed she wasn’t a girl anymore…she had grown into beautiful young lady. When I first laid eyes on her near the Ferris wheel my heart would’ve skipped three beats, you know…if it could.

Almost immediately as I notice her, she notices me. She runs over to me and throws her arms around me, I admit I was stunned she’d never done that before, but then again we hadn’t seen each other for three years. She pulls back to look at me; at first her eyes lock with mine but then her eyes rake down my body.

“OMG! Just look at how you’ve grown Rorey!” she exclaims excitedly.

By that time the shock had worn off

“Vanessa, my god you’ve changed a lot too.” I commented, flashing the first genuine smile in weeks.

Vanessa giggles.

“Although I know vampires don’t age” she adds as an afterthought “Let’s go to the Fun House, it’s our favorite attraction.”

“Yeah, I was there earlier and left a truck sized hole in the wall.”

I told about getting angry about the whole vampire thing and punching the mirror.

“Whoa, if you don’t calm it down your parents are bound notice something’s amiss.”

Vanessa’s prediction is proved right on target as none other than, my father, Darius walks out of the Fun House. He spots me and strides over

“Hey Rorey, I thought I might find you near here, this is your favorite attraction after all…and is that little Vanessa; whoa you’ve grown into quite the looker”

Vanessa smiles

“Thanks Mr. Valentino”

“Yeah we were just coming by to see if they fixed the hole yet”

Darius informs us that the hole was made recently, as in today.

“The odd thing is my UED sensor went off again while I was investigating; I thought it might be a poltergeist”

“Dad?” I ask curiously

“What exactly is a UED sensor?”

He smiles at me.

“You see Son, UED is an acronym that stands for Undead Ethereal and Demon sensor; it detects the presence of any manner of unholy beasts and apparitions such as werewolves, specters…”

“Or vampires?” I finish the line for him.

Dad’s face darkens at the word. He then says in a deadly voice “Especially vampires.” He cools off quickly and decides to walk with us to the Bumper Cars and that’s when I see the most frustrating person on Earth; Jason Wylder.

Jason was just as stocky as I remember blonde hair was kind of long and got in his face. His face still had an ignorant look on it. He notices me and a wicked smile flashes across his pale face.

I’m immediately on edge as he approaches. For the second time that day get that bad feeling. Jason shouts at me when he’s in range:

“Well if it isn’t my favorite punching bag!”

My eyes narrow at that last part. You see before I was bitten I was the type of kid who easily blended into the background; a proverbial doormat. But one thing I noticed after I became a vampire is that I’m a lot more aggressive. He swung a mock punch at me I immediately catch it.

“That was before, don’t think I’m the same as I was before” I say fiercley.

He stared for minute and gives another wicked smile

“Ooh! Look who grew a backbone…maybe I should test it?”

“Go ahead and try!” I growled at him.

Vanessa taps me on the shoulder

“Dial it down a notch or your dad will catch on” she whispers in my ear.

But before I can respond Jason pounced on me and pinned me to the ground by putting his foot on my chest. My dad finally notices we’re not with him and upon seeing me on the ground he starts running in our direction but before he could get close enough I ferociously grasp Jason’s leg and slam him into the pavement so hard that he leaves a large smoking crack.

Vanessa gasps and I glance at her face white and she is pointing in the direction of my father, I look and an expression of utter shock on his face. I stood and looked over to where Jason landed; he was further away than I anticipated. Then I investigated the crack, it was three yards away from Jason. I walk over to Jason to see whether or not he was conscious, but when I looked he was gone.

Just I was raising my head to look when something big, brown and furry slammed into me. When we land I felt a set of knives penetrate my sides, lift and throw me into something big and hard and miraculously I’m still conscious; a normal person would be out cold.

I shakily stand and look; standing before me is a wolf that is the size of a small car. Brown fur, malicious yellow eyes and a set of very sharp canine teeth, I quickly realize the knives I felt earlier were actually this thing’s teeth.

“Rorey! Are you all right” Vanessa shouts as she runs up to me.

“Yeah amazingly”

observing the wolf I recognized that it was Jason Wylder, he was a werewolf. Vanessa noticed my intense stare. “What’s wrong?” Instead of answering her I spoke to the werewolf.

“Jason…I didn’t know you were a werewolf?”

“A werewolf!” my mother’s voice says from behind Jason.

The werewolf turned and looked at my mother and a malicious glint flashed in his eyes. Jason charged at my mom, fur raised and teeth bore. I started moving without really thinking and with a perfect shoulder check I knock Jason back, so that I can get in front of my mother.

“Rorey, how are you so fast?” Esmeralda asks apparently shocked.

“Stay behind me!” I shouted.

Jason snarls at me. I turn to him, hiss and bare my fangs; the ultimate sign of vampirism. Jason flinched when my fangs came out but recovers swiftly and pounces tackling me. This time I’m ready and plant my foot on top of Jason’s head and push his teeth into the ground then I skillfully kick him across the midway and into the Ferris wheel.

My father is just watching with utter shock. My conscience makes me to come back to my senses and now I’m scared.

“Vanessa” I say in a frightened voice “What’s happening”

She gives me a sympathetic expression

“I don’t know”

Esmeralda walks up to me

“A vampire eh?”

mom embraces me.

“Vampires are creatures too and no matter what you are still my son”

I look at my mother and then a flash of red light zips by my head.
My dad come running with a large weapon that looks like it belongs on a space ship.

“Esmeralda, get away from that-that, that blood sucker.”

I flinched at how my father uttered that last part.

“Darius! This is Rorey, your son!”

The look in my dad’s eyes and a look of utter hatred.

“I have no relation to a vampire”

He raises his weapon and aims at me.

“Dad!? Please don’t do this?”

My father’s expression turned to rage

“You are NO SON OF MINE!” I paled and my eyes began to tear up.

“Dad.” I mutter.

I sharply turn and run painfully cold tears stream down my cheeks as another red flash zings overhead. My dad…sorry Darius lines me up in his crosshairs and is about to fire when my mother steps into his sights with an angry appearance.

“Even if you’ve disowned him, I will not allow to destroy our son.”

She then annunciates an incantation that produces a large blue veil.

She turns and looks at me

“Run Rorey! Run! I’ll hold him off!”

I take off at full speed of course with my Vampire speed I’m ten miles away by the time I stop running; I don’t know where I am but it’s obviously a forest of some sort. Darius’s words are still bouncing around in my head.

I back up against a large maple and slide down, draw my knees up to my chest and break down completely. People usually assume that vampires are heartless, while that is technically true that doesn’t mean I don’t have emotions.

Soon my cold tears halt, and my mind starts to slowly regain coherent thought and then I hear my cell phone go off. I look at the caller ID and the caller is Vanessa, I answer it.

“Hello.”
Vanessa responds “Rorey. Where are you? You took off so fast that I didn’t see where you went.”

I cast a look at my surroundings

“I’m in a forest”

“A forest hmm? Could that be Etna State Forest?”

I gasp and examine my background more closely and it turns out she’s right.

“Your right Nessa, I’m in Etna.” I wait for her reply.

“Etna got it, Stay where you are, I’ll be there soon.”

She hangs up before I can respond. I guess I’ll wait here not like I have anywhere to be.

Vanessa arrives in 55 minutes;she pulls into the parking lot in a white Pickup Truck. I’m sitting on a picnic table. When she steps out of the truck she glances around and notices my semi-long brown hair, she runs up to me.

“Rorey!” she yells when she’s in range.

“I was really worried about you.”

I try to smile; just can’t, my heart will not let me smile.

“Your mom is really worried too.”

I hadn’t forgotten what my mother said but before I could recognize it an overpowering aroma was filling my nostrils. As the scent passes through my brain I feel a great pain in my gut as if someone had punched me with an armor-clad fist.

“Rorey, what’s wrong?”

I knew what was wrong.

“I’m starving Nessa, I’m starving”

Vanessa looked warily at me

“Don’t worry, you are not on the menu”

She smiles and gives me a playful punch in the shoulder. I return my attention to that overpowering fragrance, I scan the area and then I abruptly take off, I can vaguely hear Vanessa shouting my name; I turn and shout back

“Don’t worry; I’ll be back in a flash, just checking out a scent!”

I then turn on the turbo and fly towards the source of the scent. When I get there I’m completely shocked by what I see, there are about 13 people lying on the ground; blood flowing freely. Then I hear heavy footsteps followed by panting, the next thing I hear his Vanessa’s voice:

“Damn it Rorey! I said stop!”

“Sorry I didn’t hear you.”

But now she isn’t focused on me her attention was now on the 13 bodies lying on the forest floor. She looked at me

“Please tell me you didn’t do this

“I didn’t” I assure her

“I found them like this.” She walks over to the closest one and checks for a pulse but just as she stands back up to tell me the verdict we both hear a loud hiss. We both jump like three feet in the air but I get over the shock quickly and home in on the sound what I see shocks me more than the 13 obviously dead bodies.

Standing before me was a young man; he looked like he was around 19 or 20 years old. He had tan skin and shaggy black hair and threatening brown eyes. The most shocking thing was that he had fangs like mine.

“What are you doing with my prey?” he asked in a menacing voice.

“N-nothing!” I stutter out.

He starts walking towards us, eyeing us suspiciously

“Aren’t you afraid of me” inquires the young man.

I bare my fangs instead of answering. His eyes lose their malice and go wide with shock

“You’re…you’re like me?”

he was more stunned than I thought. Then it hits me

“Am I the only other vampire you’ve met?”

He nods inaudibly. He looks me up and down and assumes a less threatening posture. He retracts his fangs, oh did I tell you vampires can extend and retract their fangs. I decide to introduce myself; after all we did arrive unannounced

“I’m Rorey Valentino and this is my friend Vanessa DuGalle.”

He seemed to notice Vanessa for the first time

“Is she you know, one of us?”

I shake my head

“No she’s a normal human and you know it’s rude not to tell us your name, after we tell you ours”

He was taken aback. “Oh…my name is Jacob, Jacob Marteny” He still eyed me suspiciously.

“I mean no harm Jacob, I just smelled them”

I state gesturing towards the dead bodies. He smirked

“But dude, you need to be a little more covert, they’re going to notice 13 missing people.”

Jacob just smirked.

“How long ago were you bitten Jacob?” Jacob stops and ponders for a minute and states “About two months ago.”

Whoa that means he’s a brand new vampire and doesn’t know the ropes yet; while I on the other hand have been a vampire for little over a year.

“That means you’re a brand new vampire, and don’t know the ropes”

Jacob looked a little fearful.

“Don’t worry you’re not in trouble but I do think you shouldn’t travel alone especially with the Wylder pack prowling the area”

“Why don’t you come with us?” Vanessa asks.

Jacob thinks and says

“I’ll join you if, you can teach me how to control my urges.”

“Of course as long as you teach me how to hunt so effectively”

I say gesturing towards the bodies yet again. Jacob genuinely smiles

“You can help yourself if you want.”

Rorey’s hunger was getting the better of him

“Are you sure?” Jacob nods “I’ve had my fill.”

I look at Vanessa with a look that says Are you okay with this.

“I’m fine with it, like your mom said you’re a creature too and you need to sustain yourself”

she walks up and gives me a light punch in the shoulder.

“While you dine, I’ll check in with your mom.”

I had almost forgotten my mom was worried about me. Vanessa walks towards the ranger station. I turn my attention back to the bodies and drank my fill which took like thirty minutes. (I hadn’t hunted since two days before the festival.)

Vanessa comes back just as I stand back up

“Rorey your mom wants to speak to you.”

I use my forearm to wipe my mouth clean and take the cell phone

“Hello Mom?”

“Rorey! Sweat heart, are you alright?”

“Yes I’m fine Mom.”

“That’s good, Vanessa told me about the other vampire you met, be careful not all vampires will be so accommodating most are very territorial.”

That fact startled me a little; it also explained why Jacob was so aggressive when we first met him.

“Mom, is that why I tried to tear off Jason Wylder’s head?”

Esmeralda was silent for a moment.

“No, that was for another reason.”

“And that reason is?” I insisted

“That reason is nature; you are a vampire, Jason is a werewolf you two are natural enemies.”

It finally started to make sense; my aggressiveness towards Jason Wylder was due to my natural animosity towards him. “Rorey listen to me, your father’s vendetta with vampires is great he will do anything to destroy a vampire so keep your wits about you and never let your guard down.

We’ll speak again for now good luck my son. She hangs up. I hand the phone back to Vanessa

“What did your mom say?” She asked looking at me.

“She said to be careful and to keep in mind that Darius will do anything to destroy a vampire.” She nods in understanding

“Let’s get out of here; the longer we wait the sooner Darius will find us.”

“Right we need to find Jacob and take off.

I look around and Jacob Marteny is nowhere to be found.

“Jacob!” I shout.

He apparently hears me because he appears in a flash.

“What?” he says smugly

“We need to get out of here there is an expert monster hunter after us.”

Jacob looks at me incredulously

“A monster hunter?”

“Yeah…and he hates vampires with a passion” I inform him.

He nods in understanding

“So where do we go from here?” he requests.

“A good question” I respond simply.

“Why not just start driving and see where the road takes us?” Vanessa asks while pulling up in her white pickup.

Jacob and I exchange stupefied looks.

“Why didn’t we think of that”

“Because you always over think things Rorey.”

I smile sheepishly. We hop into the truck with Vanessa and take off.
We ride down the street heading into what we didn’t know but regardless it had to be better than what we left behind. We drove out of Myca City and as the urban sprawl turned replaced by breathtaking rural scenery.

We took turns driving; I was behind wheel when we came across a small motel, I knew Vanessa needed sleep so we stopped for the night as she slept Jacob and I kept watch for Darius or any other danger; possibly of the blonde headed ignorant type.

Jacob took watch on the roof, why I had no clue while I took the room as I knew Vanessa better and let’s just say I don’t trust Jake yet I don’t want him to get hungry and take a chomp out of my friend because I’d crush him to dust.

It was around three in the morning when I hear a loud thump on the roof, my first thought was that Jacob was getting bored but that thought was quickly pushed out of my mind as said Newborn crashed and I kid you not, crashed through the roof Vanessa woke with a scream I look up to see a stocky, black haired guy I instantly smelled rancid dog.

I face palmed myself and curse under my breath. The black haired guy jumped down through the hole and snarled at me. I raised my eyebrow incredulously at him, my other eyebrow twitching

“Don’t sass me mutt!”

I uppercut him sending back up through the hole. I turn to Jacob and help him up

“Time to take the dogs out” Jacob says ferociously and jumps up through the hole, I then hear a mighty crash and I see the black haired werewolf fly across in the other direction.

Vanessa looks at him shaking her head

“Are you sure it’s a good idea for that crazy jackass to travel with us” I ask humorously.

“Just go and help him before the crazy fool gets himself killed” I nod and jump through the hole myself.

When I get out there I see Jacob and the black haired werewolf squaring off with each other. The humanized wolf charges first and knocks Jacob to the ground with startling force, the werewolf picked up Jacob who was still dazed and threw him across the parking lot and into a large UPS delivery truck which almost bent in half.

For some reason I start to feel anger and indignation bubbling up inside me. Before I can even comprehend what I’m doing; I use my inhuman speed to get in between Jacob and the black haired werewolf. I bare my fangs and hiss at the approaching mutt who answers with a loud snarl.

I swiftly seize the dog by the scruff of his neck and hurl him towards the moon and with frightening speed even for a vampire Jacob recovers and appears above the suspended creature; with an almighty hatchet kick and sent him into pavement with such force that even Satan would’ve felt the tremors.

I step over to the hole in the ground and peer down and see a very dead werewolf, not even an Alpha male wouldn't have lived after hitting the pavement with that type power. Jacob was looking down at him

“Well now he knows what pancake feels like.” He stated humorously, I glanced at him and smirked

“Not bad Fledgling, not bad. I didn’t actually expect you to kill a werewolf”

Jacob looked at Rorey curiously

“That’s a werewolf?”

the older vampire nodded

“Yeah, just in his human form”

Jacob inclined his head

“Thanks for helping me Rorey” said the tanned vampire with a slight blush on his face.

“Not a problem Jake…you’re a fledgling who is just learning the ins and outs of being a vampire” I responded

“All though you may want to keep in mind I only have a year’s worth of experience so I’ll teach you what I can but I’m still learning myself.”

“That’s alright, what we don’t know we’ll learn it together…what do you say” Jacob suggested me and for the first time I caught a glimpse of the person that is Jacob Marteny, he was a flamboyant person; hyper as all hell.

I noticed something else about him he wore his figurative heart on the outside like armor I knew that meant he was one of those who were easily hurt but unlimitedly kind. I had no more time to think about it as I hear a scream of pure terror; I whip around and curse under my breath

“How could I be so stupid” I exclaimed Jacob tilted his head curiously “Werewolves are just like their normal counter parts, they always attack in packs” I explained quickly before moving as swiftly as possible when I reach the room I see Vanessa trapped against the wall by three werewolves their teeth bared and snarling, I tried to open the door but apparently there was a clever werewolf in this group as he had jammed the door but I would not loose Vanessa, no not now not ever. I raised my foot and kicked the door down with all the force I could muster which caused said door to fly across the room and smash into pieces on the opposite wall. I charged into the room and moved in front of Vanessa who seemed relieved, I let loose a low hiss and bared my fangs daring them to move which wasn’t a smart move since there was only one of me and three of them.

I would agree, but I finished David Copperfield--which was 736 pages long in Paperback.

In any case, nice job Nico! smile
